SONG FOR GABRIEL

This song was written on March 1,1977, camping on a quiet beach, near Hapuna, on the Big island of Hawaii. (3:53)

Like a wind blown feather fluttering by
I find myself floating and no longer trying
Like an autumn leaf finally falling free
For a moment, I too just let myself be

Nothing to lose, it is we who choose
To love or to live in fear
Nothing to lose, it is we who choose
To be lost or to be here

Like a wave that’s breaking far away at sea
There’s a smile that’s about to break in me
Like the spray that’s reaching to take my hand
I want to open my arms and embrace the land

Nothing to lose, it is we who choose
To love or to live in fear
Nothing to lose, it is we who choose
To be lost or to be here

Like a grain of sand blending with the rest
I find myself letting go of the quest
Like a blade of grass shining in the sun
I can feel the light and know we are one

Nothing to lose, it is we who choose
To love or to live in fear
Nothing to lose, it is we who choose
To be lost or to be here

Like a wind blown feather fluttering by
I find myself floating and no longer trying
Like an autumn leaf finally falling free
For a moment, I too just let myself be

MY FRIEND

Written for Bruce Everett in Toronto, in August, 1978, while in massage school (one month before Sasha was conceived!) (2:35)

Oh my friend, come to me
I know you’re feelin’ sad
But what will be, will be
Come and lay, your head upon my breast
Come, let go of all the rest

Oh my friend, come to me
At times I know it’s hard
For us to clearly see
Come and lay, your body close to mine
Come, all will be well in time

Oh my friend, come to me
Take a full deep breath
And let yourself just be
Come and see, yourself within my eyes
Come, let go of all disguise

Oh my friend, come to me
I know you’re feelin’ sad
And what will be will be
Come and lay, your head upon my breast
Come, let go of all the rest
Come, let go of all the rest

EVERFLOWING

Written for Des Brennan, in April, 2005, in Maple Ridge, BC (5:42)

Sometimes it seems that there’s no one there
Like a cloud when it blocks the sun
Sometimes it seems that I’m drawn to compare
My life with another one.
And as I breathe in a little more deeply
A ray of sun finds my heart
And there’s a soft voice whispering to me
You are here where you’ve been from the start.

And the gifts are everflowing,’ when I open to receive
Forever overflowing, like a sweet rain over me.

Sometimes I’m wanting to be somewhere else
As if that could possibly be
Sometimes I think that I know someone else
And I have a good laugh on me.
Once again I take a deep breath
And the quiet finds me here
I look at my life so blessed
As I gratefully shed a tear.

And the gifts are everflowing, when I open to receive
Forever overflowing, like a sweet rain over me.

Sometimes I miss the beauty around me
Like a sunrise filled with song
Or the colors of a sunset remind me
To slow down on this path I’m on.
That’s when I remember to breathe
And simply let the moment be
Such a sweet mystery
Unfolding within me.

And the gifts are everflowing, when I open to receive
Forever overflowing, like a sweet rain over me.

Sometimes it seems that I’m lying to myself
As if it might ease the day
When I hide the truth, I become someone else
And with you I lose my way.
May I surrender to life more deeply
And love this mystery,
Being true to myself completely,
I find you here within me.

And love is the healer, it is who we really are
Surrender to love’s whisper, and listen to the stars.

And the gifts are everflowing, when I open to receive
Forever overflowing, like a sweet rain over me.

Like a sweet rain over me, like a sweet rain over me…

SNAKE WOMAN

Inspired by Des, in June, 2005, when we separated (a vision of being a snake also inspired the song) (5:50)

Snake woman slithers along the path
Shedding her worn out skin
Snake woman slows along the path
As she plunges deep within
This shedding skin, so old and worn
And ready to fall free
It holds the guilt, tattered and torn
And the fear of who she might be

Snake woman, who are you, why do you stand alone
Snake woman, who are you as you let go of the known
Snake woman, who are you and why do you stand alone
Snake woman are you ready to step into the unknown

The horizon stretches on and on
As she sees herself right here
And fields of green go on and on
Reflecting as her mirror
A call to change awakened her
Said it’s time to move on
Yet on is here and will surely be
In each step of her song

Snake woman, who are you, why do you stand alone
Snake woman, who are you as you let go of the known
Snake woman, who are you and why do you stand alone
Snake woman are you ready to step into the unknown

As each day dawns, forever new
And greets her with a smile
She smiles back in gratitude
Surrendering for a while
She moves into a circle of sun
Warming her wondrous skin
While the whole of creation has begun
To embrace the change within
The whole of creation has begun
To embrace the world within

Snake woman, who are you, why do you stand alone
Snake woman, who are you, as you let go of the known
Snake woman, who are you, and why do you stand alone
Snake woman are you ready to step into the unknown

Let go of the known, step into the unknown
Snake woman, who are you and why do you stand alone
Snake woman are you ready to step into the unknown

Let go of the known, step into the unknown

SWEET MYSTERY

Inspired by Gangaji, my first spiritual teacher, in May, 1997, Maple Ridge, BC (www.gangaji.org) (3:13)

There’s a deep yearning in my soul
There’s a deep calling to come home
And there’s a sweet taste of the truth
There is always more , more to me and you

Who am I, do I know you
What is life , all I want is truth

There’s a deep sense of mystery
There’s a deep longing to be free
It’s such a sweet dance upon the earth
There is always death, death and then rebirth

But who dies, who then is reborn
What is life, who will die no more

There is peace in welcoming the truth
There is peace in thanking you
It’s such a sweet blessedness to be
Simply being here is being free

And I am here, freedom welcomes me
To see the seer of this sweet mystery
Sweet mystery……sweet mystery…..

NEW EYES

Inspired by my teacher, Adyashanti, in March 2006, in Maple Ridge (www.adyashanti.org) (5:52)

Sweet tears, cleansing tears, what will you wash away
The illusion of me, the story of me, a story made of clay
I open my arms, I open my heart, my mind is blown away
At what remains, from day to day, as stories fade away

Seeing through new eyes what’s here before me
Innocent new eyes, seeing through me
Seeing more clearly, I am not alone
Infinite oneness is calling me home

I close my eyes, the world it fades into a memory
Who am I and who are you, without the story
I wake up now and open my eyes & see just what is here
When I look no further than here & now, the truth is crystal clear

Seeing through new eyes what’s here before me
Innocent new eyes, seeing through me
Seeing more clearly, I am not alone
Infinite oneness is calling me home

Sweet surrender, like a wave becomes the sea
I finally fall away until, there’s nothing left of me
And the only sound is a heartbeat, the only movement, breath
And who I am is revealed, in birth, in life, in death

Seeing through new eyes what’s here before me
Innocent new eyes, seeing through me
Seeing more clearly, I am not alone
Infinite oneness is calling me home
Seeing more clearly, we are not alone
Infinite oneness is calling us home,
All of us home……….and this is home

LOVING WHAT IS

Written in Sedona, Arizona, in March, 2007 and inspired by another teacher, Byron Katie. The CD was nearing completion and I realized I had no song for Katie, and I felt compelled to include one! (www.thework.com) (4:59)

Loving what is, she said, will always help me see
How I lose each time I argue with reality
And every time I embrace this life and death,
Love is what holds me, in every single breath. oh oh oh

We are this love, this endless love
Love is the current that we ride upon
It flows in every river and in our very core
It flows in every feeling and opens every door
Till we are bursting at the seams
Awakening from this long dream
Coming home to all that is
Dying into all that lives.

Loving what is, she said, will always help me see
How I lose each time I argue with reality
And every time I embrace this life and death
Love is what holds me, in every single breath. oh oh oh

So I lay my body on this rock,
And stillness is my lover
As earth and body, breath and thought
Melt into one another.
And I’ll make sweet love with the mountain
Make love with the sky
And let the flowing fountain
Be tears of joy I cry!

Loving what is, she said, will always help me see
How I lose each time I argue with reality
And every time I embrace this life and death
Love is what holds me, in every single breath
And every time I celebrate this life and death
Love always holds me, in every single breath
Every single breath, Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

SIMPLY HERE

Inspired by teacher, Eckhart Tolle, in January 2000, while driving home to Maple Ridge, after seeing him in Vancouver
www.eckharttolle.com (3:24)

There’s so much here to celebrate
There’s so much here right now
When we surrender to this time and place
We find our home somehow

And we are here, simply here
And this moment is what is
We are blessed, truly blessed
And this life’s a gift to live

This heart explodes with gratefulness
For what is here and now
These words seek only to express
The silence that resounds

When we are here, simply here
And this moment is what is
We are blessed, truly blessed
And this life’s a gift to live

These eyes are opening to see
The light of dawn returning
The earth and sky fall into me
And celebrate the joy of being

For we are here, simply here
And this moment is what is
We are blessed, truly blessed
And this life’s a gift to live

Yes, we are here, simply here
This moment is what is
We are blessed, truly blessed
And this life’s a gift to live
This life is here to live!

TOMORROW

Written for Rod MacDonald, a wondrous musician from Greenwich Village, New York. (written in Invermere, BC in May, 1983) (3:51)

I wanna share some feelings before you go
Will you be willing to listen
I know you’re moving fast and so,
You’ll move with the wind’s next whistle
Move with the wind’s whistle….
I thank you for the depth within the moments we’ve shared
Our tunes harmonized from the start
Now I hear the wind whistling through your hair
And I pray you’ll find peace in your heart

And the earth will turn, the wind will blow
No need to yearn, we’ll find our tomorrow

I’ve learned to find beauty along the way
And I’m learning to listen more clearly
And as I watch you go, there’s really nothing to say
Just this song in my heart to remind me

That the earth will turn, and the wind will blow
No need to yearn, we’ll find our tomorrow

And the earth it will turn into many a tomorrow
As we move so graciously upon her soil
And as you move with the wind, I want you to know
That our sharing has brought me joy

And the earth will turn, the wind it will blow
No need to yearn, we’ll find our tomorrow

We’ll find our tomorrow, la la la la la la la la
La la la la la, la la la la la la la la , la la la la la la

WHY NOT DANCE

Inspired by spring, and Adyashanti, in Maple Ridge, in May, 2006. My dear friend, Ed Denison, also inspired this song. (3:53)

Spring is here and such new life explodes without restraint
Blossoms burst and flowers bloom and green just fills the day
May I open like the flower, simply bloom and not know how
May I just be like the flower, as it is here and now

Why not sing, why not dance, why not give this life a chance
Why not say yes to what appears, yes to joy, yes to tears
Why not sing, why not dance, why not give this life a chance
Why not say yes to what is here, yes to love, yes to fear

I feel creation’s magic hand reaching deep into the earth
And with a wave over the land, welcomes this rebirth
From my sleep I hear this call, asking me to wake up too
In the mystery of spirit’s call, I see myself as new

Why not sing, why not dance, why not give this life a chance
Why not say yes to what appears, yes to joy, yes to tears
Why not sing, why not dance, why not give this life a chance
Why not say yes to what is here, yes to love, yes to fear

As this world turns round and round & I know not what to do
May I be the very ground that all of life moves through
I raise my arms to the sky and receive infinity
Why not dance and not know why, simply be the mystery

Why not sing, why not dance, why not give this life a chance
Why not say yes to what appears, yes to joy, yes to tears
Why not sing, why not dance, why not give this life a chance
Why not say yes to what is here, yes to love, yes to fear

Yes to what appears, yes to what is here, yes, yes, yes, yes!

CLAYOQUOT BLESSING

My daughter, Sasha and I were among the 943 people arrested in the summer of 1993, in protest of the logging of the old growth forest in Clayoquot Sound. I sang this in court, as my “speaking to sentence” – written in July 1993 (4:00)

Our ancient growth holds so much life upon which we depend
Each one of us must take a stand, our blessing we must send
For the ancient trees are calling in their own tongue
They’re asking for protection, I pray for everyone

There’s a gift in their being
A gift in being alive
There’s a reason they’re living
A reason they survive

Salmon find their way upstream, returning home to spawn
I pray for their protection, their streams must live on
Bear they feed on salmon, as lichen feed the old trees
Deer and elk find shelter here, all they want is peace

Chorus

Osprey, eagle spread your wings above the ancient growth
I pray that your vision will help keep the forest whole
For the balance of this web of life, we hold within our hands
I pray for more connection to this sacred land

There’s a gift in our being
A gift in being alive
There’s a reason we’re living
A reason we survive

I stand alone among these trees, breathing in their gift
And I sing for their protection, my voice will help the shift
To honouring our wilderness, connecting with my own
Our planet is a precious gift, and our only home

Chorus #2 (twice)
And yet, will we survive?

CYCLES AND STREAMS

Written in Creston and Invermere, BC in June 1983. (6:04)

A lone buttercup lifts her face toward the sun
And lives on till her season dies
A lonely heart looks to find the one
Who will soothe her by and by
As the buttercup fades and is lost to the rain
Another soon will bloom
Will love turn to loneliness once again
And will laughter greet the full moon

What do you feel in your soul,Watching the cycles unfold
What do you feel in your soul

As evening forever follows the day
And pain often follows joy
As summer soon will surrender to fall
And a child soon forget his toy
As the planet lives and dies around me
And cycles unfold within
And the stream always finds its way to the sea
But where do I fit in

What do I feel in my soul, Watching the cycles unfold
What do I feel in my soul

As the rain and sun give life to our earth
And love gives life to us all
Into the stream of life may I surrender
That I may hear the planet’s call
As one moment gives way to the next
And the stream flows on to the sea
The cycles weave impermanence
And the stream only wants to be free
And the soul only wants to be free

What do you feel in your soul, Watching those cycles unfold
What do you feel in your soul, What do you feel in your soul
Ooh ooh….

QUIET JOY

Written in Creston, BC for my daughter Sasha Rose, on a very sweet morning in September 1985, after she lead me on a beautiful meditation. (she was 6 years old at the time!) (2:00)

There’s a quiet joy from within my heart
And a tear rollin’ down my face
There is peace like I’ve never felt before
And I’m touched with a gift of grace

As I open to this love we share
And our hearts beat in unity
From your eyes there appears a light so fair
And I’m feelin’ so blessed to be me

For I’m breathing in just this moment
And slowly breathing out fear
And I accept this path with a glad heart
And I trust that my way is now clear

There’s a quiet joy from within my heart
And a tear rollin’ down my face
There is peace like I’ve never felt before
And I’m touched with a gift of grace

There is peace like we’ve never felt before
We are touched with a gift of grace

HALLELUIAH!

This was also inspired by Eckhart Tolle, in April 2001, in Maple Ridge BC. Eckhart wrote the best selling book, “The Power of Now” (3:47)

Well it’s simply freedom that seeks a voice
And when I’m open, there is no choice
For what is calling is here to stay
This present moment wont go away
And it’s simply love that wants a song
Wants me to sing it till I am strong
For what is calling is here to stay
This present moment wont go away

Halleluiah, halleluiah, hallelu, halleluiah
Halleluiah, halleluiah, hallellu, halleluiah

And when I surrender to what comes along
I am the silence and I am this song
And what is calling me is here to stay
This present moment wont go away
And it matters not who comes to call
There’s love and freedom, enough for all
And what is calling us is here to stay
This present moment just wont go away
This present moment is here to stay
This present moment…..is here to stay

Halleluiah, halleluiah, hallelu, halleluiah
Halleluiah, halleluiah, hallelu, halleluiah
Halleluiah, halleluiah, hallelu, halleluiah
